Timekeeping for Entrepreneurs

What do you do all day?

Like most entrepreneurs you’re probably “on the go” all day.

You’re likely juggling more than one project at a time, or maybe more than one business.

You may consider yourself a busy person, but are you as busy as you think you are?

How much time is well spent and how much is wasted?

Are you getting the best return on investment (ROI) for the time you put in?

The easiest way to find out is to simply make a note of what you do during a typical day and how much time is spent on each task.

There are all sorts of time tracking apps and software out there, but personally I find that a simple notepad and pen works just fine.

Be sure to get one that’s small enough to fit in your pocket or purse so you can easily carry it around with you.

You can pick them up cheaply in most stationery stores.

Write down the time that you start each new task.

When you’re done, write down the time you finished, and a few details about what you did – how difficult it was.

Also note down whether you collaborated with other people, and any other details you think are relevant.

Don’t just make a note of the time you spend on important stuff.

Make a note of EVERYTHING you do during your working day, no matter how trivial.

This includes recording time spent traveling, meals, bathroom breaks, phone calls, updating Facebook, idle chatter, the works!

Start today, and keep doing it for a couple of weeks.

All of this will help to build up a picture of what you do during a typical day.

Don’t try to analyse anything just yet (we’ll get into all that next time – in a couple of weeks), just write it all down.

Soon you’ll start to see a pattern emerging, and it may just surprise you!
